Portland Chapter Frequently Asked Questions

Are you part of the SBA? No, we are an independent nonprofit organization. We are resource partners with the SBA and receive some funding from them, but we operate independently.
Is SCORE just in Portland? The Portland SCORE chapter is part of a national organization of over 350 chapters. In the Northwest there are additional SCORE chpaters in Eugene, Salem, Redmond, Medford, Cannon Beach, Vancouver, WA and the Tri-Cities, WA.
Where does the money come from to run your chapter? We manage our budget carefully and the chapter is run almost exclusively by unpaid volunteers. Our sources of funding are:

Income from our workshops
Funds from the Small Business Adminstration
Occassional Special Events
Donations from businesses and other local organizations
Donations from grateful clients who have become successful

Who runs Portland SCORE? We are managed by a volunteer Board of Directors, elected by the chapter membership. Daily activities are run by elected officers, our Chapter Chairperson, our Treasurer, and one paid adminstrative assistant. Counseling, our Workshops, and the Business Resource Center are managed by an active committee system. (Click here for a list of current officers)
Is SCORE an acronym? Originally it was an acronym for "Service Corps of Retired Executives". Recently the acronym has been dropped because so many of our current volunteer members are still active in their careers.
Why are you "Chapter 11"? We were the 11th SCORE chapter to form, and so we carry a name that signifies a business bankruptcy. We have a sense of humor about it, though, and we also take great pride in the many ways we help local businesses succeed.
